About Department
- The Commerce stream was introduced in the academic year 1965–66 as a General course. The Honours specialization in Accountancy began in 1973–74.
- Initially courses were offered in an evening shift for working students. Later in 2003 the department merged fully with the mainstream section of the college.
- Since 2023-24 Major and Minor course programmes initated under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 under University of Kalyani.
Objective
The Department of Commerce aims to provide quality education in commerce and business studies, nurturing students into capable professionals, entrepreneurs, and socially responsible citizens. It strives to develop analytical thinking, financial literacy, and managerial competence to meet the evolving needs of the global economy.
Mission
- To impart commerce education that collaborate both theoretical knowledge resource as well as practical applications.
- To prepare students for careers in the field of accounting, finance, banking, taxation, and management.
- To develop ethical values, critical thinking, and a spirit of innovation.
- To encourage students to pursue higher education, research, and other filed of employment.

Functioning
- Courses Offered: B.Com. Major & Minor subjects (with core subjects like Accountancy, Business Law, Marketing, Financial Management, Income Tax, etc.).
- Teaching Methods: Classroom lectures, case studies, seminars and ICT-enabled teaching.
- Assessment: Continuous internal assessment, projects, and end-semester examinations.
- Co-curricular Activities: Commerce quiz competitions, career counselling.
- Faculty: Experienced and qualified teaching staff committed to student success and curriculum enrichment.
Future Plans
- Introduce postgraduate programs (M.Com) and certification/diploma courses in finance, accounting, and digital commerce.
- Establish an Entrepreneurship Development Cell and Placement Cell to support student careers.
- Promote research and publication among faculty and students.
- Develop industry-academia partnerships for internships and skill-based training.
- Upgrade infrastructure with a dedicated Commerce Lab and digital learning resources.
- Organize national-level seminars, workshops, and student exchange programs.
