About Department
The Zoology Department of Santipur College is dedicated to the scientific study of animal life in all its diversity, from microscopic organisms to complex vertebrates. The department seeks to provide students with a strong foundation in theoretical concepts as well as practical skills through laboratory work, field studies, and project-based learning. Along with imparting knowledge of animal biology, ecology, and evolution, the department encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and environmental awareness. By blending academics with hands-on experience, it aims to prepare students for higher studies, research, and careers in life sciences while nurturing a sense of responsibility towards nature and biodiversity conservation.
Objective
To provide quality education in Zoology, fostering scientific temper, critical thinking, and research aptitude among students, while developing their understanding of the diversity, structure, function, and conservation of animal life.

Functioning
- Academic Programs: Undergraduate courses with both Honours and General programs in Zoology.
- Teaching Methods: Classroom lectures, laboratory experiments, field visits, seminars, and workshops.
- Research & Projects: Small-scale research projects on local fauna, biodiversity surveys, and ecological studies.
- Extension Activities: Organizing awareness programs, webinars, and exhibitions on environmental and zoological themes.
Future Plans
- Establish a biodiversity documentation unit for the Santipur College campus and nearby areas.
- Introduce add-on certificate courses in Applied Zoology, Wildlife Conservation, and Environmental Management.
- Strengthen research collaborations with universities, government agencies, and NGOs.
- Develop a Zoology museum with specimens and models for academic and public awareness purposes.
- Promote digital learning through e-content, online lectures, and virtual laboratories.

The Department of Zoology maintains a well-stocked departmental library containing more than 50 titles covering a wide range of subjects in the life sciences. The collection includes standard reference books and textbooks on Invertebrate Zoology, Vertebrate Zoology, Ecology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Endocrinology, Biodiversity, Taxonomy, Biostatistics, Developmental Biology, Animal Physiology, Immunology, Genetics, and Parasitology.
This library serves as an important academic resource for both students and faculty, supporting coursework, research activities, and competitive examination preparation. It provides easy access to subject-specific literature, helping learners deepen their knowledge and broaden their understanding of various branches of Zoology.

About Laboratory
The Department of Zoology is equipped with a well-maintained laboratory that provides hands-on learning and research opportunities for students. The laboratory houses a diverse collection of conserved specimens of both invertebrate and vertebrate fauna, enabling students to study animal diversity and morphology in detail.
Practical activities include microscopic staining techniques, dissection of representative specimens, titration experiments, and other standard zoological procedures. The laboratory is equipped with simple and compound microscopes, along with other essential instruments such as centrifuges, calorimeters, pH meters, and hemocytometers, ensuring accurate observation and analysis.
This facility is designed to encourage experiential learning, allowing students to connect theoretical concepts with practical applications, develop technical skills, and gain confidence in scientific investigation.
