About Library

Santipur College Library System consists of one Central Library and departmental libraries for Hons. Departments. The Central Library is situated at the 2nd floor of College Building and properly arranged. Total collection of books is 28,384(approx). Besides, the college library has collection of periodicals (both Bengali and English) and Daily News paper (both Bengali and English). Through N-List a huge collection of E-Journals can be accessed by our students and all member of Santipur College.

The Central Library has maintained Koha Library Management Software. OPAC system has also been maintained for students. Now everyone can search books of Santipur College Library from anywhere.

About Reading Room

A reading of a college library would reveal a mix of focused study, collaborative work, and even moments of relaxation. The atmosphere is typically quiet but not silent, with the low hum of conversation, the rustle of turning pages, creating a subtle backdrop of productivity. Beyond academics, some students might be found reading for pleasure. The library is a central hub for campus life, serving as a sanctuary for academic pursuits and a meeting point for social and intellectual exchange.

Objective

  1. Provide accessibility to information in a well organized and coherent manner.
  2. Provide facilities and services for students and all staff of the college to discover needed information and use them according to their needs.
  3. Develop an efficient and effective college library which is adaptable to the changing academic environment.

Mission

The mission of the Santipur College Library is to:

  1. Support teaching, learning, and research by providing timely access to quality information resources in both print and digital formats.
  2. Preserve knowledge and heritage through the maintenance of rare and valuable collections.
  3. Promote information literacy by guiding students and faculty in effectively using library resources and digital tools.
  4. Encourage lifelong learning and nurture critical thinking, creativity, and research culture.
  5. Ensure inclusiveness and accessibility so that all members of the academic community, including first-generation learners, can benefit equally.
  6. Integrate modern technology with traditional resources to function as a dynamic and user-friendly knowledge hub.

Purpose

The primary purpose of the Santipur College Library is to support the teaching, learning, and research activities of the institution by providing access to relevant information resources and services. It aims to:

  1. Facilitate academic excellence by supplying textbooks, reference materials, journals, and digital resources.
  2. Preserve and promote knowledge heritage through its collection of rare and old books.
  3. Encourage self-learning, critical thinking, and research orientation among students and faculty.
  4. Provide an inclusive and accessible environment where all learners can enrich their knowledge.
  5. Act as a knowledge hub that connects traditional resources with modern ICT-enabled services.

Functioning

The Santipur College Library functions as the central academic support system of the institution. Its operations are guided by principles of accessibility, inclusiveness, and efficiency.

  1. Collection & Access – The library maintains a rich collection of textbooks, reference books, journals, rare volumes, and e-resources, accessible to students and faculty.
  2. Library Management System – ICT-enabled tools and library management software are used for cataloguing, issue–return, and record keeping.
  3. Reading Facilities – A well-maintained reading room provides space for self-study, group discussions, and reference work during college hours.
  4. Orientation & Awareness – Orientation programmes, such as “Know Your Library”, are conducted to familiarize users with resources and services.
  5. User Services – Reference support and access to digital platforms are offered to enhance learning and research.
  6. Feedback & Improvement – A system of user feedback is maintained to improve the quality of services and ensure user satisfaction.

Through these practices, the library ensures smooth functioning and continues to play a vital role in supporting the teaching–learning and research ecosystem of the college.

  3. Photocopy Service for students and staff to facilitate academic work.
  4. Drinking Water Facility within the library premises for all users.
  5. Wi-Fi Connectivity to support digital reading, research, and access to online journals.
  6. Subscription to More Journals to enhance research opportunities and subject coverage.
  7. Introduction of Audio Books to support diverse learning needs and make resources more inclusive.

  4. Question Paper Facility – Access to previous years’ university/college question papers for student reference.
  5. Career Guidance and Counseling – Academic and career-related support for students.
  6. Reading Facility for Newspapers and Magazines – Access to daily newspapers, periodicals, and magazines to keep students updated with current affairs and general knowledge.
  7. Digital Resource Access – Use of e-books, e-journals, and online learning platforms to supplement print resources.
  8. Reading Room Service – Spacious and quiet environment for individual study and group learning.
  9. Feedback System – Register maintained to collect suggestions and feedback from users for service improvement.

General Library Rules for Library users and staff

1 The Library remains open from 10.30 AM to 4.30 PM (Monday to Friday) and 10.30 AM to 01:30 PM (Saturday) throughout the year except holidays. Reading Room of the library remains open for college hours on all working days.
2 Library remains closed on holidays.
3 Use of the library is strictly reserved for readers possessing a library card and College Identity card.
4 Every person who enters the library will sign the visitor’s register.
5 Readers are not allowed to borrow books on the cards of other readers.
6 Issue of books in demand may not be renewed.
7 The library reserves the right to recall any issued book even before its due date.
8 Materials such as rare books, reference books, and other books marked for consultation shall not be issued.
9 Loss of book/library card, should be reported immediately in writing to the Librarian.
10 Marking and defacing of books/journals is forbidden.
11 Borrowers must satisfy themselves about the physical condition of the books before borrowing, otherwise they will be held responsible for any damage noticed at the time of return.
12 Users are advised not to issue Books to others on their names.
13 Smoking, eatables and drinks are not allowed inside the library.
14 Mobile phones are to be switched off, or kept on silent mode, inside the library premises.
15 All readers are required to maintain discipline/silence in the library.
16 Library staff will not be responsible for readers’ personal books and holdings.
17 Outsiders may use library facilities on the recommendation of Principal/ Teacher-in-Charge of the college.
18 Books are issued for 15 days. If not returned by due date, fine as per rules will be charged.
19 Books lost or destroyed shall have to be paid for or replaced by the borrower (same or latest edition or actual cost of the book as per library records) to the satisfaction of the Librarian.
20 “Library Clearance” certificate will be given from library only after the library books are returned after completion of course.
21 The theft or abuse of Library resources like books, journal issues, and dissertations will be viewed very seriously. Each case will be examined to ascertain its genuineness and the matter will be reported to the Principal/ teacher-in-Charge.

Rules for Reading Room, Santipur College Library

1 The right to use General Reading Hall is exclusively reserved for bonafide members of Central Library, Santipur college .
2 Members should produce their Library Membership card at the entrance.
3 Readers should not leave bags/books/copies on the table and cannot claim, capture, and reserve seats for future use.
4 Seats are to be used/ occupied on first come first serve basis.

Book Arrangement method

Books are arranged according to Dewey Decimal Classification Method.

Book searching method followed

Closed Access System has been maintained in the Central Library. OPAC system has also been maintained for students. Now everyone can search books of Santipur College Library from anywhere.

Book Lending method followed

One book is issued to the students for fifteen days (15days).

For College staff books are issued for thirty days (30 days).

The Project entitled “National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST)”, being jointly executed by the UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium, INFLIBNET Centre and the INDEST-AICTE Consortium, IIT Delhi provides for cross-subscription to e-resources subscribed by the two Consortia and access to selected e-resources to colleges.

The N-List specifically facilitates research by providing electronic access to a wide array of resources such as research articles, journals, and books. This platform not only simplifies research but also enables users to read, store, and evaluate electronic information conveniently.

Remark

The Central Library of Santipur College organized the “Know Your Library” orientation program on June 25, 2025, with the objective of introducing students and faculty to the wide range of academic resources and facilities available in the library. The program witnessed enthusiastic participation from undergraduate students across different disciplines, as well as faculty members of the college.

During the session, participants were guided through the use of the cataloguing system, reference services, digital resources, and rare book collections, enabling them to make more effective use of the library for their academic and research pursuits. The initiative proved to be highly beneficial in creating awareness about the vital role of the library in enhancing knowledge, supporting teaching-learning processes, and promoting research culture within the institution.

The program successfully reinforced the library’s commitment to serve as a knowledge hub and to continually support the academic aspirations of the Santipur College community.

Rare Books Collection

A distinctive feature of the Santipur College Library is its rich collection of rare and valuable books, which preserves scholarly works of immense academic and historical significance. Some of the prized volumes in the collection include:

  2. English version of Siddhanta Koumudi
  3. Vishnu Purana: A System of Hindu Mythology and Tradition by H.H. Wilson (1961 edition)

  5. Mahabharata translated by Kaliprasanna Singha
  6. Mahabharata by Vedavyas (complete set in 27 volumes)
  7. Chaitanya Charitamrita by Krishnadas Kabiraj

  9. The Indian Struggle: 1920–1942 by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, compiled by the Netaji Research Institute, published by Asia Publishing House (1964) – considered the most comprehensive single-volume work on Netaji
